Picking up the pieces after the flood

Many homes, schools, roads, public infrastructure were left severely damaged.

The devastating floods in KZN have claimed more than 400 lives and have displaced many residents, with the daunting task of having to rebuild their lives.

Hundreds if not thousands of people have been left homeless.

Many homes, schools, roads and public infrastructure were severely damaged.

Seggie Chetty of Short Street, Marburg was one of many South Coasters affected by the flooding. He recalled that floods also damaged his family home five years ago.

Just recently Mr Chetty fell ill and had his leg amputated and as a result is unemployed. Due to the recent flooding he has lost a 40m boundary wall. Raging water came up to window height of his home.

Being unemployed for some time now, he and many others have to come to terms on how to rebuild and fix their properties.

KZN has heard stories about children, mothers, fathers grandparents and neighbours being swept away as their homes crumbled under the pressure of the flood waters. Areas located close to rivers and waterways like Mr Chetty’s and including informal settlements were severely affected and many dwellings were swept away.

Government has ensured that extensive work is underway to restore basic services, such as water, electricity, sanitation and waste removal to various areas in the province.
