Heavy downpour causes widespread damage

In Umzinto, numerous areas faced Mother Nature's wrath.

Severe weather conditions experienced in KwaZulu-Natal this week affected many parts of the mid-South Coast with extensive infrastructure damage in certain areas, and flooding.

In Scottburgh yesterday (12th), a massive section of the R102 near GJ Crookes Hospital collapsed and two vehicles went down with it.

Fortunately, there were no casualties.

The road has been closed to motorists, and its condition continues to deteriorate.

A few metres away, Renishaw bridge was submerged in water and prevented anyone from entering or exiting the area.

Multiple access routes were no go areas due to flooding and the Mpambanyoni River overflowed too.

There were also reports of roads being blocked by fallen trees and debris, particularly at Abrams Crest and Rocky Bay, as well as near Happy Wanderers Resort, Kelso.

Surrounding areas also had their fair share of road flooding.

At Park Rynie beach, water flooded the entrance under the railway line. The violent current prevented entry, even on foot.

A huge chunk of Alexandra Crescent collapsed, Roshan Heights was flooded and water gushed through the CBD, especially near the testing ground facility. The bridge at Isonti was also washed away resulting in no access to the area.

In response to the wet weather and to help those affected by flooded or damaged houses, Umdoni municipal halls were opened as temporary relief shelters.
