Port Edward resident begs for service delivery

The workers left it open when they were supposed to fix it, and this is now distracting the residents because it's not easy driving next to the hole.

Port Edward is one of the towns on the South Coast that has been dug up in several spots to carry out repairs to sewer and water lines, but the jobs have not been completed.

Two weeks ago, Boundary Road was dug up after a sewer leak was reported to Ugu.

The workers left it open when they were supposed to fix it, and this is now distracting the residents because it’s not easy driving next to the hole.

In the main road to town (Owen Ellis Drive) another hole was dug when there was a water leak, Ugu workers came to fix the leak in the middle of the road and did not do the road repair.

Ugu dug up a section of road and left it uncovered.

As a result motorists have to be very careful of this hole.

Peter Brereton, a resident said he is failing to get Ugu to do their job.

“If I had to phone Ray Nkonyeni Municipality or Sanral to report something they come and get it fixed. They do their job and we can see it, but Ugu is a different story.”

He says it’s a crying shame that Ugu is not doing anything.

“When the workers came here to fix the hole in Boundary Road, they didn’t have enough tools so they knocked on my door and borrowed them.”

A hazard after Ugu dug up an area up to fix a leak and didn’t return to fix it.

He said that the people who work on the ground try and do what they are supposed to do, but the problem is the people who are sitting in offices and not doing the ground work.

“I have developed a relationship with the workers here and I don’t mind lending them tools, it just goes to show that they are not being looked after if they don’t even have enough tools to do their job.”

Another problem is the reservoir that has no proper gate and the verge is overgrown.

The area around the reservoir has not been cleaned for months, it is now surrounded by bush and it has become a hiding spot.

This is supposed to be a road to the reservoir.

Brereton says anyone can walk into the reservoir and put whatever they want in the water and no one would know.

He has tried calling Ugu a number of times to help with these issues but the only matter that has been attended to is the hole in Owen Ellis Drive.
