Eyesore grass verge cut down by residents

The overgrown verges reduced traffic to one lane.

Tired of waiting to have their verges cut properly, residents of Lions Grove, Bobby Mahadeo and Robert Cele took it upon themselves to clear an extremely dangerous section on Indira Road recently.

Both, Bobby and Robert were concerned about the safety of pedestrians and motorists as the overgrown verge reduced traffic to one lane. This chivalrous nature prompted the two to hack away the thicket.

Overgrown verges pose a danger to pedestrians and motorists on Indira Road, Lions Grove.

Morgan Naidoo, chairman of the Umbango River Conservancy and a resident of Sastri Road said the overgrown verges are due to the unsatisfactory work begin done by the verge contractors.

“These contractors are servicing the Lions Grove area including, Indira, Sastri and Sea View Road. The standard of work is poor. The clearance by Mr Mahadeo and Mr Cele was done in fear of an accident occurring at the bridge on Indira Road. We are concerned residents and we keep our area clean. We expect our municipality to follow suit. The lack of supervision from supervisors is evident,” he said.

He added that he had written to the municipality previously complaining about unsatisfactory work being done by verge contractors who were servicing the Lions Grove area.

He said that the grass was cut in March and the standard was worse. “When I wrote an email to the municipality, all I got back was a reference number, “said Mr Naidoo.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) spokesman, Simon April was contacted for comment but none was received before going to print.
