Serial rapist sentenced to 82 years jail time

Nkululeko Freedom Magubane (25) aka Nkulu of Mfazazane thought he could celebrate New Year’s Day 2020 at the beach, however he was arrested by police for several cases of rape which had occurred in the previous months in Hibberdene.

Two years later, and he appeared in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court for 19 counts in three cases and was sentenced to a total of 82 years’ imprisonment on March 30.

His name has also been entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders.

Detective Sergeant Siboniso Gcaba of the Port Shepstone Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) successfully investigated the three cases against Magubane, and ensured the maximum sentences were obtained.

On May 6, 2019 Magubane forced a 24 year-old woman into an abandoned RDP house in Ghobela area and raped her.

Then, in October 2019 near Makhoso area he raped one of two young girls, aged 15.

Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said the teen and her friend were threatened with death if they did not comply.

On December 22, 2019 he knocked on the door of two women alone at home pretending to be a neighbour needing a cellphone charger.

When the door opened, he held them up at knifepoint and raped one of the women. He demanded cash and took their cellphones before fleeing.

One of the victims was able to identify the accused from the area and police began following all possible intelligence.

“Information was received when he was spotted at the Turton Taxi Rank on January 1, 2020 on his way to the beach thus ending his run from the law,’ said Mpinge.

The cellphone belonging to one of his victim’s was found in his possession.
