Half-done repairs pose a danger to motorists

Repair jobs left unrehabilitated along the road has become a nasty hazard for motorists on the South Coast.

Last Thursday motorist Khalid Eldiwany (24) had an awful, unexpected experience just some 100 metres from his house in Oslo Beach at about 19:15.

After the heavy downpour that same afternoon, Eldiwany claims the sand from the deserted road works turned into a ‘mud slide’.

Eldiwany, who was travelling to his parents home for dinner at the time of the accident, said he lost control of his vehicle, as he came over the blind corner, and collided with another vehicle.

“I am a very cautious driver who stays on the far left in a lane. My car slid into the opposite lane and I had to try fight it, to get it back into my lane, which obviously didn’t work. I hurt the same knee that I broke in 2017, and got a gash on my head. My car is a write-off,” he said.

He also pointed out that no signage was erected to warn motorists of the danger.

Eldiwany said he has since visited the couple from the other vehicle in hospital, who were seriously injured in the accident.

Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge confirmed that a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by Port Shepstone Detective Service, and no arrests have been made as yet.

Not only dangerous for motorists but an eyesore too.

“One vehicle had already left the scene when police arrived. They found two persons had sustained injuries to the leg and head. Both injured persons were taken to hospital for immediate medical treatment,” he said.

Eldiwany said they are currently seeking legal action against the party (or parties) responsible.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) spokesperson, Simon April confirmed that repairs was not carried out by RNM nor by its agents.

Acting spokesperson of Ugu District Municipality, Mondli Ncane said they are verifying details with the water section, and they will respond once they receive more information.
