Fairview water protest spills out into streets

Ugu refuted claims the area had had no water supply for four months.

Residents of Fairview in Umzumbe had enough of living with dry taps, and a large irate group took to blocking the R102 and the N2 earlier this week (Monday). Motorists were met with burning tyres, trees branches and angry protestors blocking the roads. Residents claim they have not had water for some four months (since November last year), and are desperate to get answers. One protestor told the Herald that more than 300 families are affected by the ongoing water crisis. In response, Ugu District Municipality, led by deputy mayor Mandla Chiya, attended to the protesters who had barricaded the R102.

Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mandla Chiya addresses the protesters who had barricaded R102 on Monday morning this week.

“The municipality would like to refute claims or misinformation peddled by some community members that they had been without supply for four months. We can however state that the municipality is investigating the cause of intermittent supply to some areas in Fairview,” said acting spokesman Mondli Ncane. “As we speak, most community members in the area are with supply, except for a few. In the interim, while investigations are continuing, we have made provision for water tankers to supply those with erratic supply.”
