What should have been a pleasant beach walk turned into a nasty experience for Maria Erasmus of Manaba when she tripped over a pothole and fractured her leg.
Maria was taking an afternoon walk down Beach Road in Manaba last Wednesday when the incident occurred.
This is one of the many roads in the area that are laden with potholes.
The pothole in question is quite large, however its depth is misleading when viewed from the top of the road coming down.
“When you are coming from the top of the hill downwards, you cannot see it properly,” Maria explained.
She was taken to a local hospital where medical staff conducted x-rays and fitted a back slab onto her leg.
Maria described the pain as unbearable and she is only due for a follow up at the hospital on February 17.
“I actually heard my leg crack as I fell into the pothole, it was so sore and really swollen,” she said.
Maria is a pensioner and views the situation as unnecessary, as it could have been avoided had the roads not been in the state that they are currently in.
“I’m really upset as all I wanted to do was go to the beach. Now I have to sit with this pain for no reason,” she added.
The municipality has been contacted for comment, however no feedback has since been received.
