Ugu confirms Preston water overflow not sewage discharge

However, frustrations grew when the man received no feedback form authorities since he reported it around the end of December.

A home owner from Marine Drive in Preston, Park Rynie raised concerns about water overflow, suspected to be sewage discharge.

The matter had been going on for weeks and the water flowed through the home owner’s driveway and left residents no choice but to drive through the muck on a daily basis.

The dirty water which flowed into stormwater drains.

“The substance would stick on vehicle tyres and was brought into the garage,” said the home owner.

“It was also a terrible eyesore, but has now dried up from the driveway and in most parts of the road.”

However, frustrations grew when the man received no feedback form authorities since he reported it around the end of December.

Ugu’s health environmental services officers recently conducted a site investigation and the outcome revealed no evidence of any raw sewage or effluent discharge on this property at the time.

“There is however, evidence of rain/storm water discharge emanating from the vacant lot situated adjacent to Lot 54 Park Rynie – Marine Drive,” explained Ugu spokesman, France Zama.

“The volume of the surface/rainwater overflow has increased onto the road surface, as this is consistent with the recent rainfall and the gradient of the vacant property.

“It must also be noted that the municipal conservancy tanks serving the neighbouring properties in the area are emptied on a monthly basis on either side of Lot 54 Marine Drive, and during the site inspection there was also no evidence of any sewage discharge emanating from the neighbouring properties.

The stagnant water on the road earlier this month.

“The team also took samples of the water to conduct an analysis to detect the presence of E-coli, whilst being cognizant of the fact that surface run-off water has a real propensity to contain a negligible amount of E-coli.”
