RNM speaker regrets unfortunate events that led to reconvened council meeting being called off

The meeting was expected to determine the executive committee councillors, and elect the mayor, the deputy mayor and the chief whip.

Cllr Zodwa P Mzindle, the speaker of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) is saddened by the events that led to the reconvened inaugural council meeting having to be aborted last Friday.

The meeting which was scheduled to start at 12:00 on  December 3 was supposed to continue with the outstanding matters that could not be dealt with in the first meeting on November 23.

The meeting was expected to determine the executive committee councillors, and elect the mayor, the deputy mayor and the chief whip.

The reconvened inaugural meeting had to be called off after it failed to have a quorum as a result of 37 ANC councillors, who were having a caucus in preparation for the council meeting, were prevented by the protesters to exit the council chambers to join the meeting at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre.

These councillors were blocked by protesters who had gathered within the precinct of the council  chambers, in Connor Street, Port Shepstone.

The speaker who was also part of the 37 ANC councillors, hopes that this calamity which has led to the municipality not having the executive committee and fully fledged office bearers after more than three weeks of the local government election results having been gazetted, will be resolved by those having power to do so.

She concluded by indicating that her office together with that of the municipal manager will make all necessary efforts to minimise repercussions of this unprecedented and unfortunate situation.
