R200-million worth of drugs stolen from Hawks office

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo said the perpetrator gained entry through a window by forcing it open.

Drugs worth R200-million were stolen from the Hawks Serious Organised Crime office in Port Shepstone.

The suspects took 514kg of cocaine to the street value of R200 000 000 and ransacked the office where the safes were kept.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo said the perpetrator gained entry through a window by forcing it open.

“A case of business burglary has been opened for investigation. This happened between November 5 around 4pm and November 8 around 7am.”

She said one of the safes in the office used to store exhibits was tampered with.

Mbambo said the National Head of Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, has appointed the Deputy National Head to conduct an inquiry into the theft while the Detective and Forensic Service has been requested to investigate the matter.

No one has been arrested yet.
