Busy time for paramedics as accident numbers rise

Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that three patients sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

In the last week, numerous accidents have taken place in and around the South Coast.

Craig Botha of Kwazulu Private Ambulance Service responded to a collision on the P200 near Riversmead Farm on Tuesday.

When emergency services arrived they found that two vehicles had been involved in a collision.

Paramedics quickly assessed the scene and found that three patients sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious.

“The patients were treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment,” he said.

Botha said paramedics responded to a collision on the R61 between Shelly Beach and Port Shepstone last Sunday.

When emergency services arrived they found that two vehicles had collided, causing one of the vehicles to leave the road and go down an embankment.

Together with the help of Ray Nkonyeni Fire and Rescue, and Saps Search and Rescue, patients were brought up the embankment using specialised steep slope rescue equipment.

On the same day, Hendrick Ludick of Airtrack X-Treme Security Solutions responded to a track and recovery of a vehicle.

“Airtrack, assisted by SAPS K9 and Highway Patrol units, helped to locate the vehicle down a steep embankment which was not visible from the road.”

On further investigation, they found the body of an unknown man trapped underneath the vehicle. He died at the scene.

“The owner of vehicle arrived on scene and informed that the vehicle was taken by a family member. They have been looking for the vehicle since the previous night before they reported the matter to their tracking company,” he said.

The scene was handed over to Saps for further investigation.

Netcare 911 responded to a collision on the N2 opposite the Southcoast Mall last Saturday.

Shawn Herbst said reports indicate that two cars were involved in a collision, resulting in a roll-over of one of the cars down an embankment.

“Four occupants from the vehicles had sustained minor to moderate injuries and were treated on scene before being transported to hospital,” he said.
