Umkomaas ‘crash, Bing, bang’ on Royal’s league parade

Log leaders Royal Durban carried an 18-point advantage.

The final round of the 2021 Composite League was played at Umkomaas Golf Club recently. This tri-club league between Umkomaas, Selborne and Royal Durban sees 12 players from each club playing Stableford, at each of the three courses, to accumulate all points into a ‘composite’ team score.

Heading into the final round at Umkomaas, the log leaders Royal Durban carried an 18-point advantage. The Umkomaas players put their home course knowledge to best use and triumphed on the day with 352 consolidated points, translating into an overall win of 1047 points to Royal Durban’s 1038 and Selborne’s 966.

The same day the Umkomaas Ladies League team was battling it out against Port Shepstone, currently second on the log, at Scottburgh.

After a ding-dong battle, the match finished three points all, with a win, loss and draw each from the three betterball teams.

Saturday’s glorious weather was perfect for golf and players were treated to some spectacular scenes of several pods of whales playing offshore. With just a handful of games still to go, the league leaderboard is looking tight. Winning on an excellent 90 points was The Naickers (Tom and Dean Naicker, Christopher Pillay and Kuben Naidoo), followed by the ever-consistent Southern Lights (Wally Kent, Ken Koster, Russell Cumming and Brian Kassel) with 84 points.

Third place on 83 points were The Umkomaasters (Jacques Kirstein, Barry Taylor, Nelson Moonsamy and Saga Reddy). Counted out were the Dom Pappas and Ocean Wave. The rain of last week has already had a positive impact on the course with many fairways greening up, seemingly overnight. Excellent scores and increasing rounds of golf are a testament to the condition of the course and thanks must go to the terrific greens team.

Spring treatment is set to take place on September 6 and 7 and the course will be closed for these days. We are confident that the work put in now will reap great rewards as our club gets ready to host both the men’s and ladies interclub competitions in October. Next week is ‘how to lose friends’ with Betterball Multiplication.
