Popular police constable laid to rest

Julian Sagaren Gounden (29), of Park Rynie, and a constable based at Harding police station, was involved in a fatal accident on the night of August 11.

According to police, Gounden’s vehicle was one of two in a collision on the R612 near the Umzinto correctional facility.

He was off-duty at the time and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The young officer was a well-known local in the mid-South Coast and matriculated at Umzinto Secondary School.

He then chose a path to serve his country and attended police college in 2019. He was later stationed at Harding Saps.

The news of Gounden’s sudden death left many of his colleagues, friends and family members stunned. He was described by many as a humble man who touched the lives of those around him.

When he wasn’t reporting for duty, Gounden thoroughly enjoyed soccer and fishing and made many friends over the years through his hobbies.

Members of Scottburgh and Harding Saps united with Gounden’s family, friends and members of the community to bid him farewell last Wednesday.

The funeral service was held at the Gounden residence in Park Rynie for the usual proceedings.

Thereafter, the body was taken to Scottburgh police station where local officers paid their final respects to Gounden before going to the Verulam Crematorium.

Gounden leaves behind his father and mother, Sagaren and Sweetie, as well as his sisters Kameshri and Veneshri.

The family said that the son of their house was nothing but a generous, zealous, selfless and diligent worker who had a great sense of humour and always had the best interests of others at heart. He will be sorely missed.
