Crayfish poachers nabbed, let go on a warning

They had been on their way from Port Shepstone to Mtwalume.

A number of crayfish poachers, aged between 21 and 35 years old, were released on a warning last Sunday after a total of 165 crayfish were seized, 15 of which were in berry.

The crayfish, valued at R1650, were dropped back into the ocean.

Crayfish season is closed from November 1 to the end of February. The bag limit is eight crayfish per person/license.

None of the six poachers was in possession of a valid licence to catch crayfish.

Saps Port Shepstone Search and Rescue and Saps K9 responded to information received regarding the poaching.

A vehicle carrying six people was stopped on the R102.

They had been on their way from Port Shepstone to Mtwalume.

The vehicle was searched by police and crayfish and spearfishing equipment was found in the vehicle.

None of the six passengers was in possession of a valid licence to catch crayfish.

A bag of crayfish was seized.

They were subsequently arrested and taken to Hibberdene Saps and finally released on a warning.

The Department of Forestry and Fisheries was also present.
