PROTEST UPDATE: Port Shepstone community stands together against rioters [WATCH]

Sections of the community joined Saps and private security companies to thwart rioters and save their businesses.

A crowd of 300 to 400 people was seen moving from Murchison towards the Marburg and Merlewood area earlier today.

Protest chaos has unfolded around the country today as mobs demand the release of former President Jacob Zuma, calling for him to be released from prison, where he has started serving a 15 month sentence for contempt of court.

Local businessmen, security companies and police stood united at the main Marburg traffic light intersection (near KFC) to prevent an approaching mob from making its way into the town of Port Shepstone.

The businessmen have joined forces to prevent their businesses from being looted.

Reports from the ground say some of the crowd has run back, and others have diverted into the bush.

So far, the Ugu Market in Mkholombe has been burnt and the shopping centre in Gamalakhe has been looted and burnt.

People are encouraged to stay at home and to not risk travelling.
