Soldier Vishay Singh loses battle in ICU

The 22-year-old succumbed to his injuries yesterday (Wednesday) after spending five months in hospital.

Vishay Singh (22) of Palmview sadly succumbed to his injuries and died yesterday (Wednesday).

Vishay had been in hospital for just over five months, after he was allegedly driven over by two men outside his residence in Palmview on January 9.

Over these five months, support and prayers from Vishay’s family, friends and community poured in, in the hope that he would eventually pull through and recover.

According to Vishay’s sister, Vashna Moolchand, he was critically injured on the night of the incident.

She said that his multiple injuries included cervical spine, nasal, jaw, leg and rib fractures, internal bleeding as well as brain damage.

Still in critical condition and unconscious, Vishay was later moved from a public hospital to a private hospital by the military where doctors continued to run tests and scans on him.

During this time, doctors performed procedures they could, while waiting for him to regain consciousness.

Vishay Singh (22) died yesterday (Wednesday) after succumbing to his injuries.

According to police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge, two men Reevek Ramlall (35) and Durell Govender (24) were arrested on January 11 for allegedly driving over Vishay.

He added that the accused were facing charges of attempted murder.

They appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on January 19 and January 21 for a bail hearing, where their applications were denied.

On March 8 they appeared in court again and were granted bail.

Unfortunately, Vishay’s battle came to an end just over the five month mark.

After navigating through this tumultuous and emotionally taxing period, the family is left devastated.

Vishay served in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and 2021 would have marked his first official year as a soldier.

“From the time Vishay was a little boy, he wanted to become a soldier and he finally fulfilled his dream,” said Vashna.

His family described him as a very jovial and friendly person who many can recall having a fun moment with.

“He was our lifeline, and being the only grandson from my grandfather’s side, he carried the surname of our family,” Vashna added.
