UPDATE: Roads closed, motorists urged to exercise caution as N2 protest action continues

The public is urged to avoid travel.

There are unconfirmed reports that roads going in and out of Port Shepstone have been closed due to protest action which started yesterday (March 23).

Motorists are urged to avoid travel to all these areas:

Reports also indicate that the N2 north of Port Shepstone to Hibberdene is closed.

The northbound lane of the R102 is also closed, as it has been blocked at Umzumbe and Melville.

Furthermore, the N2 – Harding and Kokstad is also closed.

Old St Faiths road is closed as the road is blocked just north of the Tweni off-ramp.

According to reports the Ezinqoleni area is also tense.

More to follow, as soon as an official update has been received.

ORIGINAL STORY:

About 5 000 community members embarked on a protest action and blocked the N2 freeway at Ezinqoleni with burning tyres earlier today.

“A municipal guard room was set alight and a tractor was partially burnt,” said provincial police spokesman, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

A 25-year-old suspect was arrested after he was caught in possession of petrol.

Items were set alight on the road.

“Port Shepstone Public Order Police and Ezinqoleni SAPS were at the scene to monitor and stabilise the situation.

A case of public violence has been opened for investigation,” said Captain Gwala.

Two more suspects, aged 30 and 45 were arrested for public violence.

They will appear in court tomorrow (March 24).
