Field officers go extra mile to rescue puppies

Lindokuhle Mbele managed to trace the woman's cellphone number and make contact with her.

Two trainee field officers of the Lower South Coast SPCA recently went above and beyond the call of duty to save the lives of a litter of puppies.

The officers sprang into action after a woman posted on Facebook that she didn’t want her puppies anymore and wanted to give them to the SPCA.

Lindokuhle Mbele managed to trace the woman’s cellphone number and make contact with her.

Worried that the puppies might land in the wrong hands, Lindokuhle, together with his colleague, trainee field officer Sibongiseni Mtshulana, ventured out to KwaMadlala to rescue the puppies that same evening.

“We rushed to get to her address in order to stop her from giving them away,” said Lindokuhle.

He explained that they had to park the vehicle and walk about 5km to get to the woman’s house, located in the foothills of KwaMadlala.

“The woman sent us a GPS location and we followed the route by torch light. We were so happy when we reached the house and found the dogs.”

The owner told the officers she was giving the puppies due to not being able to feed them.

Although they couldn’t find the mother of the puppies in the dark, they will return this week to collect her.

Once the mother dog is sterilised she will be returned to her owner.

The puppies have since been given the necessary vaccinations, bathed and are doing well. They soon will be looking for homes.
