A group of Port Shepstone businessmen have united to supply oxygen to Covid-19 positive patients.

The group called Human Aid SA – Operation Oxygen, has been actively involved in voluntarily helping the community for the last month-and-a-half.

It is serving the communities of Port Shepstone, Marburg, Umtentweni, Southport and Margate.

Mahomed Moola, one of the voluntary team members, said they had recently seen a drastic increase in people needing assistance.

They have 25 oxygen concentrators available for the public at no charge.

An oxygen concentrator is a device that concentrates the oxygen from a gas supply (typically ambient air) by selectively removing nitrogen to supply an oxygen-enriched product gas stream.

However, Mr Moola stressed that they can loan a person an oxygen concentrator but the person needing assistance, has to be seen by a doctor and in possession of a referral letter.

“From what I’ve seen in the field so far, I can’t stress enough the importance of social distancing, sanitising and wearing your mask.”

He explained that a person can be asymptomatic meaning that a person infected with Covid-19 does not develop any symptoms but could be a carrier.

With this in mind, he urged everyone not to be selfish but to wear a mask in order not to pass the virus on.

“It’s the older generation that is taking a battering,” he added.
