Man wanted on arson charges tracked down

The woman was assaulted in the house, but managed to escape during the ordeal.

Detectives from the Ugu District Operational Command Centre swooped on a man suspected for arson at Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape last week.

This was in an effort to track down offenders wanted for serious crimes committed in the Ugu District.

It’s alleged that a 43-year-old man had an argument with his girlfriend (29) at Mathulini Location in Mthwalume on December 1 last year.

The woman was assaulted in the house, but managed to escape during the ordeal.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said that when she returned home she discovered the house burnt to the ground.

All her belongings were burnt in the fire.

A case of arson was opened at Hibberdene police station.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the man had fled the area and his whereabouts were unknown.

During an intensive investigation by the dedicated team of detectives, information received led them to Kwa-Nxaghu in Lusikisiki, where the man was arrested.

He appeared at the Umzumbe Magistrate’s Court on January 8 this year and will be kept in police custody until his bail application hearing next Tuesday (19th).

Ugu District Commissioner, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele commended the members for their handling of the investigation.
