Overcoming addiction together

Among the guest speakers was an ex-prisoner who shared his life's journey and spoke about hardships he endured in his 20 years in prison.

The Laqhakaza Iphara Recovery Movement (NPO) recently held a drug awareness campaign at the Umzinto Dining Hall for locals in the mid-South Coast battling with addiction.

Emmanuel Msomi, chairman of the movement, brought with him several guest speakers from various departments to offer support and motivate those who attended to better themselves.

“The aim is to show people that with help, they can overcome addiction,” said Emmanuel.

Among the guest speakers was an ex-prisoner who shared his life’s journey and spoke about hardships he endured in his 20 years in prison.

The man stated that although he was in prison, it was not the end of the world and instead, he was able to use prison time and change himself.

“This speaker explained to all who attended that his jail time and straying onto the wrong path made him long for better days and he told everyone that for this, you just have to push yourself to do better, change and start afresh,” added Emmanuel.

“Much like addiction, you must want to change to do better.”

Representatives from the Department of Social Development, Correctional Services, addiction centres and more supported the campaign and shared messages of strength and hope.

“We help people because we care, but they must want to help themselves too,” he said.
