Rotary Club of Port Shepstone turns 70

They are the oldest rotary club in Port Shepstone.

The Rotary Club of Port Shepstone celebrated its 70th birthday last Saturday.

To commemorate its 70 years of service above self, the club enjoyed a Covid-19 compliant luncheon at Breakers Restaurant in Uvongo.

The club is the oldest rotary club in Port Shepstone with over 200 members involved over the years.

The fun-filled event was hosted by the Rotary Anns.

Erich and Therese Buhr enjoy the afternoon’s proceedings.

Throughout the afternoon plenty of smiles and laughs were shared between Rotarians and Rotary alumni.

Past president Rowan D’Arcy was master of ceremonies and kept the crowd entertained during the formalities.

Past president Eric Buhr delivered the four-way test while past president Graham Dickson officiated the event with a prayer.

A heartfelt toast to South Africa was made on behalf of past president Dell Pendock.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor, Cynthia Nomusa Mqwebu was also present to share the club’s historical moment in history.

She delivered a speech in which she explained who Rotarians are and how their service through fellowship promotes goodwill and peace in the world.Having worked with Rotarians in rural areas and in town, she testified to how their humanitarian services greatly benefit communities.

The club focuses on sustainable projects with a lasting impact.

Club president Noel Coetzee awards past president Rowan D’Arcy the Paul Harris Award for his outstanding contribution to the community.

They work together to act against dire problems people and communities face such as diseases and shortages of resources.

President Noel Coetzee delivered the keynote speech and club overview in which he highlighted the club’s history and achievements throughout its many years of outstanding service to the community.

This year, Shamin Maharaj was named Rotarian of the year.

This year Paul Harris awards were awarded to Del Pendock, Graham Dickson, Joan D’Arcy, Reggie John and Gerald Baldrey, who sadly died recently.

The highlight of the afternoon was the latest recipient of the Paul Harris award – past president Rowan D’Arcy.

The club is extremely proud of him and all other recipients.

Sergeant at Arms, past president Clive Thompson ended the afternoon’s formalities.
