As a second wave of Covid-19 hits the country, so the mayors of Umdoni and Ugu district municipalities, Sibongile Khathi and Sizwe Ngcobo respectively, took to the streets of Umzinto to raise awareness and educate people about the coronavirus.

The municipality is particularly concerned about Umzinto, described as one of the more heavily populated towns in the area.

With the numbers of infections rising, both mayors explained the importance of practicing social distancing, wearing a mask, and regularly washing and sanitising hands.

The Umdoni and Ugu teams then proceeded to host a Covid-19 awareness roadblock in Scottburgh near the Cutty Sark Hotel.

Holidaymakers are welcomed into Scottburgh and asked to abide to all Covid-19 rules and regulations to prevent further spread of the coronavirus.

The mayors, together with Umdoni’s protection services, local Saps officers and other roleplayers, targeted holidaymakers at the roadblock.

They warmly welcomed all to the area for the festive season, but asked both locals and visitors to continue following all Covid-19 protocols.

“Covid-19 is still very much alive and it takes lives, therefore people must adhere to the rules and regulations,” said Umdoni mayor, Sibongile Khathi.

“As we ask people to wear masks, they must do so properly and not just have their mask worn around the neck. Your mask must cover both your mouth and nose.”

Holidaymakers also received sanitisers to make use of in their vehicles, and were given masks.
