Several weeks ago, frustrated residents of Farm Abrams Informal Settlement in Kelso protested on the R102 to get Umdoni Municipality‘s attention to address numerous issues in their community.
A memorandum of demands was submitted to the municipality and last week, Umdoni Mayor, Councillor Sibongile Khathi convened a meeting to address locals in that area.
The priority issues dealt with were electricity and the appointment of a land evaluator.
The municipality confirmed that the installation of electricity in this community was on the cards as the necessary submissions had been made to Eskom.
However, a response from Eskom is yet to be received.
A process has also been started by the municipality to purchase the land.
Proper procedures will be followed through with the Department of Human Settlements in the acquisition of the land.
A committee of five comprising of community members was established and will liaise with the municipality on the above issues.
Mayor Khathi also promised to return to the community with a comprehensive report in three weeks.
