Up a tree to save a snake

Then sadly he got a phone call regarding an injured green mamba at Glenmore Ski-Boat Club which had died by the time he got there.

Snake catcher Sarel van der Merwe had a busy day last Sunday.

He received two phone calls from the Umzumbe area – one from a woman about a green mamba in a garage, and the second about a green mamba in a tree.

Sarel admits it wasn’t an easy tree to climb and he couldn’t climb down with the snake so he had to bag it in the tree.

“Guys there’s no need to kill snakes. Snakes have natural predators of their own, so they don’t just act as predators in the environment, they are prey too. We need snakes, because without healthy ecosystems and a healthy environment, the world would be dysfunctional,” urged Sarel.
