Margate exhibition allows artists to show off their style

Winners were chosen in various categories.

Well-known water-colourist, Grant Wood opened the Art by the Sea Club exhibition at the Margate Art Museum last week.

The first round of the exhibition runs until December 24 and again from Tuesday, January 5 to Friday, January 23. It’s closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Club chairman, Robin Ransome thanked members who contributed to the exhibition.

“The upside of lockdown is that we have more paintings in a variety of styles,” she said.

She also thanked sponsors for their support.

Trish and Grant Wood.

Winners were chosen in various categories.

“All the artists are winners. If you pick up a paint brush and create something, you are automatically a winner,” said Mr Wood.

He said people painted beautiful pictures simply for the love of creating a work of art which is appreciated by others, including the artist.

While earning money from paintings is not easy, he urged people to support the artists by buying some of the paintings on display.

“The first option to make money is to sell to family and friends. Other options are exhibitions, internet sites and competitions,” said Mr Wood.

Andy Gardner scooped the prize in the Best Seascape category at the Art by the Sea exhibition at the Margate Art Museum.

He also encouraged the artists to develop their own unique style.

“Look at different role models, choose a style but adapt it so that it is recognised as you.”

Entry to the museum is free and the public is welcome to enjoy the display and purchase paintings at reasonable prices.

The art club is now nearly 45 years old.

Robin Ransome is the winner in the Best Flowers/Still Life category.

Membership consists of some 35 members whose painting ability ranges from professional to beginners.

They meet in the activities room at the Margate Art Museum every Tuesday at 9am.

The winner of the Best Portrait, Ken Etberg.
Marianna Radley won the Best Landscape category.
A water colour of butterflies earned Anne Payn the winner’s title in the Best Wildlife category.
