Umdoni Municipality suspends municipal manager

Deputy mayor, Sibongile Khati has taken the reins as acting mayor following the resignation of mayor Thabani Dube two weeks ago.

Since the resignation of mayor Thabani Dube two weeks ago, several other staff changes have taken place at Umdoni Municipality.

Deputy mayor, Sibongile Khati has taken the reins as acting mayor and at a special council meeting last Thursday, November 5, she announced that council had decided to suspend municipal manager, Dr Vuyiwe Tsako with immediate effect amid allegations of financial misconduct and maladministration.

“Council deliberated on the written submission by the municipal manager on why she should not be suspended and resolved that an investigation by the Department of Corporative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) be undertaken,” said Umdoni Municipality communications manager, Sphelele Cele.

Manager of Expenditure, Ayanda Mthethwa, will act as Umdoni’s Chief Financial Officer.

Council also resolved that general manager of corporate services, Sikhumbuzo Dludla, would be appointed acting municipal manager while the CoGTA investigation was in progress.

Another position had to be filled at the municipality when chief financial officer, Thandazile Mhlongo’s five-year contracted ended on October 30.

At the special council meeting, it was decided that the current manager of expenditure, Ayanda Mthethwa, would fill the position in the interim.
