Habitual car thief jailed for 27 years

Sanele Mondli Mavundla was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court to 12 years' imprisonment for theft of a vehicle and a further 15 years' imprisonment on a second charge of theft of a vehicle.

The Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit in Marburg has notched up another success.

Habitual car thief, Sanele Mondli Mavundla was sentenced in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court to 12 years’ imprisonment for theft of a vehicle and a further 15 years’ imprisonment on a second charge of theft of a vehicle.

The sentences will not run concurrently. 

On June 16, 2019 he pretended to be interested in buying a vehicle used to deliver sheep and goats.

He then made off in the vehicle.

In the second case, on July 20, 2019, he hired a driver to transport goods from Marburg to Ezinqoleni.

When they got to Mkholombe, Mavundla drove off in the vehicle which had been left unattended.

He was arrested in Port Shepstone on August 28, 2019.

The case was prosecuted by Rubeun Judnarain and Regional Court Magistrate Motlatsi Moleele was on the bench

The investigating officer was Sergeant Walter Mhlongo.
