Vandals strike at Margate beachfront during lockdown
According to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality spokesman, Simon April a service provider had been appointed to do the necessary repairs.
The ablution block at Margate beach is in a state of disrepair and the popular swimming pool is closed.
This is according to Neville Meek who said that since 1980, he had used the Olympic pool almost every day during the summer months.
He told the Herald that the lifesavers’ main office had no door as this had been completely removed, adding that there had also been no improvement to the ablution block – which he described as being in a shocking state – since his last visit a month ago.
He re-visited the beach last week to find the pool closed.
“I expected the pool to be opened at the start of lockdown level 1. Margate beach was once the jewel of the South Coast. An improvement would certainly be appreciated by all,” he said.
He also pointed out that the lifesavers’ building used to house Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Law Enforcement which, he said, was encouraging for Margate beach facilities.
When approached for comment, Simon April, spokesman for Ray Nkonyeni Municipality said the beach facilities had experienced a high rate of vandalism during the lockdown period and the Olympic pool had also been affected.
“We have since however appointed a service provider to do the necessary repairs and it is anticipated that the works will be completed by October 16, 2020.”
He added that the ablution facilities and lifeguard tower had also been vandalised and the municipality was prioritising the necessary repairs.
“Members of the public are urged to assist the municipality by reporting acts of vandalism to law enforcement agencies.” he said.
