Your support for Pollyanna’s Place will help victims of violence

Donations in cash or kind will be gratefully received.

Pollyanna’s Place in Sea Park is a safe haven for anyone in trouble who has nowhere to go.

John Irven, chairman of the Community Safety Organisation (CSO) says he has been reading disturbing reports in the media about gender-based violence and pointed out that there are people trying really hard to help those in need.

‘Pollyanna’s Place’ was named in loving memory of Anne Docherty, who was a member of the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone and an active member of the community.

“I want to get the message out there that places like Pollyanna’s  Place is the other side of the coin. There is a plan ‘B’ and there are good people out there trying to help,” he says.

John is grateful to Ray Nkonyeni Municipal Manager Max Mbili and Chief Whip Selvan Chetty for supporting his dream to help men, women and children in distress.

He is also grateful to the community for all their donations over the four years that the facility has been open.

However, John needs the on-going support of the community as he is finding it difficult to run the shelter without  financial support.

“We are receiving many cases of domestic violence and that’s why Pollyanna’s Place is important in our community,” he says.

When a person arrives at Pollyanna’s Place John, from his own pocket, organises a warm cooked meal and provides  bus fare and airtime to enable the person to travel to relatives.

John needs someone to provide frozen cooked meals and is looking for donations of  pots, towels and bedding.

He would also love someone who is a fundraising guru to help him raise money to re-carpet, paint the building and do the necessary maintenance.

The facility is also used during the week for counselling purposes.

If you would like to give back and help during this difficult time,  contact John at 072 3625632.
