Joint operation leads to two arrests in Bhobhoyi

Both suspects face charges of business robbery, and one faces an additional charge related to an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Two men were arrested and an unlicensed firearm and ammunition recovered in Bhobhoyi on Thursday last week. The arrests were a result of a joint operation between Ugu Cluster Operational Command Centre, Port Shepstone Saps K9 and Paddock detective service, who acted on information received.

During the early hours of May 7 a search was conducted at a premises in Bhobhoyi during which a 9mm pistol, a magazine with four rounds and a further 22 rounds of ammunition were found. A 24-year-old man was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was also suspected of being involved in a business robbery in Paddock. He appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court, where the case of the unlicensed firearm and ammunition was postponed.

Investigations led the team to another residence in Bhobhoyi where a second man, sought in connection with several cases including the same business robbery in Paddock, was arrested. Both appeared in the Ezinqoleni Magistrate’s Court on Friday last week on the business robbery charge and are to make another appearance soon.

Ugu Cluster Commander, Major-General Sethenya Nxamagele welcomed the arrests.She encouraged her teams to continue to rid the Ugu Cluster of illegal firearms and ammunition. “I also urge the community to report any illegal firearms and other criminal activities to the police,” she said.
