Ignore Covid-19 beach ban and face a fine, warns Ray Nkonyeni Municipality

RNM has said any person failing to adhere to this ban may be prosecuted and if found guilty, could faced a six-month jail sentence, a fine, or both.

Those who continue to ignore Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’s ban on swimming at beaches and swimming pools across the municipality could face a hefty fine.

The warning came as people flocked to beaches over the weekend to swim, surf and fish despite the municipality’s ban aimed at containing the spread of Covid-19.

Concerned Uvongo resident, Michelle Smith said people were still swimming at Uvongo yesterday (Wednesday) despite the ban issued last week.

“I see a lot of people ignoring the signs and going swimming. Are people going to ignore the order to lock down as well?”

RNM spokesman Simon April said any person failing to adhere to this ban may be prosecuted and if found guilty, could faced a six-month jail sentence, a fine, or both.

“The issue of enforcing is left to those who are meant to enforce the laws,” he added.

At a press briefing last Friday, deputy mayor, Ronnie Nair said RNM had decided to close all beaches with immediate effect.

“The decision is in line with the proclamation and regulation meant to discourage public contact.”

Mr Nair said the rules refer to swimming, surfing, recreational fishing, and any other beach or water-based activity.

“As a further warning, we would like to advise against believing unproven myths about the virus, and spreading rumours or information which has not been issued by authorities.”
