New radio station on air soon

Life FM describes itself as an urban youth station bringing its listeners fresh and youthful content, but with an edge.

UMZINTO’S Bhai Plaza is now the home of the new local radio station, Life FM, which will officially be on air from March 1.

The radio station was the brainchild of South Coaster, Mlungisi Doncabe (31), who came up with the idea back in 2016.

“Due to the experience I have gained in the broadcasting industry over 13 years, I felt this was how I could give back to the community I grew up in,” he said.

Mlungisi used social media to form the board of directors and posted on Facebook groups looking for people who might have similar interests.

“We met and I shared the idea. We drew up a constitution and applied for a non-profit organisation certificate, which was granted in December 2016.”

The board of directors then had to wait for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to release available frequencies.

As no frequencies were available on the South Coast, the board’s second option was to make the station digital in the interim.

For now, the station can be accessed at www.lifefmkzn.co.za or download the Online Radio Box app from the Play Store.

Life FM describes itself as an urban youth station bringing its listeners fresh and youthful content, but with an edge.

The language split is 80 percent English and 20 percent Nguni languages with 70 percent music and 30 percent talk.

All the presenters are youth from the Umdoni area.

News coverage is 50 percent local, 40 percent national and 10 percent international.

“We are very excited about this project and hope that our locals will support this station,” said Mlungisi.
