Illegal liquor outlets targeted and fined

The public is also cautioned to refrain from consuming this alcohol as the chemical composition may have been changed.

Authorities have recently clamped down on a number of illegal liquor outlets, with joint operations being conducted by Saps, the Liquor Board, Customs and Sars.

According to Port Shepstone police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge, a number of non-compliant outlets in the Ugu Cluster were targeted.

“Experts from various distillery companies were also present during the operations, and a number of outlets were heavily fined.

“A substantial amount of counterfeit alcohol was seized and destroyed.”

Ugu Cluster Commander, Major General Sethenya Nxamagele warned liquor outlets to refrain from trading in this type alcohol and to abide by the law regarding the operating of such businesses.

The public was also cautioned to refrain from consuming this alcohol as the chemical composition may have been changed.

“Severe health problems can result from drinking this alcohol. Illegal liquor outlets can be reported to your local police station,” added Captain Mpinge.
