“The neighbourhood is a jungle, as the verges have not been cut for months, and the trenches are now posing a risk for pedestrians and children walking along the road.”

He says “We want to know if those responsible for the trenches will be back to finish the job they started?”

The abandoned long ditches are close to RA Engar Primary.

The principal of the school, Doctor Mala Appalraju agreed by saying the trenches are dangerous for school children, and she was concerned about their safety.

She added that when it rains, the ditches fill up with water and they can also harbour snakes.

Ms Appalraju pointed out that the area surrounding the bus stop near the school is also very overgrown.

Councillor Ajith Rajaram said one of the concerns is that there is no follow-up on projects from officials.

“The whole South Coast is looking terrible. The municipality has failed us.”

Ray Nkonyeni Municipal spokesman, Simon April said that none of their contractors or internal electricians had dug trenches on Crescent Street, however, investigations will be undertaken to establish who is responsible for these trenches.
