All talk and lots of action for snake catcher Sarel

Sarel quickly sprang into action and caught the adder in front of the watchful and cheering audience.

Talk about having the right man in the right place – at the right time.

The South Coast’s very own snake man, Sarel van der Merwe was in the middle of a talk to members of the Rotary Shelly Beach Club recently, when he was able to put his snake catching skills to the test when a night adder was found in the kitchen.

Sarel quickly sprang into action and caught the adder in front of the watchful and cheering audience.

Recently, Sarel and his friend Eric Alderson rescued an African rock python in Port Edward.

Sarel and Eric ventured out after 9pm to rescue a 3.5-metre python which had crossed the road and had gone to take shelter behind a local pub.

“There was a ‘No Pets’ sign, so I think that he wanted to sneak in from the back for a beer,” chuckled Sarel.

The African rock python is a large snake reaching a maximum length of around 6.5 metres.

It feeds largely on warm-blooded prey like small antelope and monkeys.

Call Sarel at 082 683 1604 if you need a snake rescued.
