Umkomaas surfer saves two from drowning

The swimmers had been caught in a rip current.

Last Sunday NSRI Rocky Bay and local charter dive operators were alerted to a drowning in progress at High Rocks in Umkomaas.

When they arrived, they found the two local men, aged 17 and 26, were safely on the beach, having been rescued by surfer, Troy Crawford.

“Troy had helped them to shore after finding them caught in rip currents. They were not injured,” said NSRI Rocky Bay station commander, Kevin Fourie.

In another incident on Friday last week, a boat capsized at the Umkhomazi river mouth, but the crew all made it safely ashore.

“No medical attention was required and locals assisted in recovering the boat,” said Mr Fourie.
