Tuning In: Smoke, plastic … and fundraising

Building eco bricks is a fantastic way to play a positive part in reducing the amount of plastic waste that finds its way into rivers and estuaries and eventually in the oceans.

SO, the pupils at a local school require a designated smoking area?

Who can afford to smoke nowadays? When I stopped smoking in 2003 it was R12 a pack of 20. The price is now more than double.

Have they forgotten that it is illegal to smoke in public? But then it is illegal to pass on the left on the freeway and that one doesn’t appear to be adhered to. And forgive me, but since when do pupils have rights?

Especially about smoking. Show me this in the South African Constitution!

Chairman Mike Lillyman says the Pennington Conservancy has embarked on a project to turn plastic waste into building bricks that will go into refurbishing the recycling depot in Pennington.

He says the recycle depot on Pennington Drive cannot cope with the volume of recycling that is deposited each week and serious difficulties have been experienced recently as the depot has overflowed with recycling bags.

The conservancy has appointed additional staff at the depot to keep it neat and tidy but there is a great need for everyone using the facility to be considerate and to deposit their recycling in bags and to keep the entrance area open.

The introduction of the eco brick project should see a substantial reduction in the amount of plastic waste delivered to the recycle depot as one eco brick will hold more than a full refuse bag of plastic.

Filled correctly the eco brick should weigh more than 500 grams.

These bricks will be used to build a new and larger recycle depot that will be able to accommodate the increasing volume of recyclable waste.

The use of different coloured bags for the various categories of recycling has been suspended temporarily as the supply of the bags from the municipality has been exhausted.

Hopefully the provision of recycling bags will be resumed in the near future.

Local schools and organisations can play a crucial role in this project. For further information please contact the Pennington Conservancy via email at penningtonconservancy@gmail.com.
