Southbroom Conservancy pays tribute to Dave and Mary Halle

Although they have moved to Margate, Dave will continue to serve the conservancy.

It has been a busy time for the Southbroom Conservancy of late.

Members provided breakfast for the Marina Beach leg of the annual beach walk, they held a lime bake-off contest, they joined the ratepayers’ association for the big bonfire to burn all the debris that had been deposited on the beachfront during the April floods and they hosted a cocktail party for Dave and Mary Halle. The couple have relocated from Southbroom to Margate Retirement Village. Paying tribute to the stalwart member, Peddy Bam highlighted the many projects that Dave had undertaken in the village and praised him for his hard work in cutting the Bushbuck Trail.

Mr Peddy said the conservancy which Dave helped to establish in 2003 had done an amazing job of conserving natural and removing alien vegetation. “Dave has also encouraged other areas on the South Coast to establish their own conservancies.”

Dave said living in Southbroom for the past 30 years had been “wonderful”.

“There is a great community spirit in the village. We can honestly say we have lived in paradise.”

He thanked the members who together with the chairman Anne Skelton had assisted him throughout the years and acknowledged the hard work that Libby Cochrane did to maintain the town’s gardens. He also toasted his wife Mary who has been his chief cheerleader.

Although they have moved to Margate, Dave will continue to serve the conservancy and his newest project is to assist the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs initiative. He encouraged the community to help collect bread tags and hard plastic tops which would be recycled. Once a bread bag is filled with tags it can be exchanged for a wheelchair which will be distributed to those in need. Tags and tops can be dropped off at Margate Furnishers.

Thanks to the event organiser, Dawne Murray, who rounded up platters of tasty eats. The party, held at the tennis club, was a festive affair.
