Louisiana pets to benefit from drive

If you feel strongly about helping animals that are not as fortunate as your own, please consider donating towards this cause, or lend a helping hand on the day.

Harmony Hill Rescue Haven, Feel Good Funding and the Department of Agriculture primary care vet from Siphofu will be offering Louisiana informal settlement residents the chance to have their dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies and five of the more common diseases on Saturday, May 18 from 9.30am to 12pm.

Everyone is urged to meet at Mayibuye Supermarket on the main road in Louisiana.

Feel Good Funding, is a non-profit Durban based company, driven to support animal welfare organisations, and was formed to assist with raising

funds for sterilisation and vaccination days such as the one planned in Louisiana.

Penny Taylor of Harmony Hill said, in addition, they will offer owners the opportunity of having their male dogs and cats sterilised on the spot and Harmony Hill Mobile Grooming will offer a free dip against fleas and ticks.

“We will also be giving away hampers of dog and cat food with a free bag of bone meal with a food dish and water bowl, plus there will be an assortment of free clothing to help the destitute cope with winter.”

Penny said that while all of this sounds very grand, it’s not without it’s problems, the main one being a lack of sufficient veterinary supplies.

They need sponsorship to purchase some of the equipment that will be needed for the sterilisations, vaccination needles, suture materials, absorbent material, sedation/anaesthetic, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, wound spray and plasters.

They hope to reach in excess of 50 animals.

“We have to do something about the uncontrolled breeding of dogs and cats,” said Penny.

If this goal is achieved they will be arranging a second outreach programme to do full sterilisations for pet owners in the Mdlala area in August.
