UPDATE: Protest action at Umgababa ends, police monitoring situation

The protest is said to have been sparked by lack of service delivery.

UPDATE, 11.50am:

PROVINCIAL Saps communications officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane has confirmed that the N2 has been reopened following a large protest which commenced earlier this morning.

The protest is said to have started as a result of angry community members who were voicing their issues regarding service delivery.

Police will continue to monitor the situation.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Protesters gathered earlier this morning along the N2 freeway near Umgababa.

Both the R102 and the N2 have reportedly been closed and traffic is currently being diverted.

Information received  suggests that trucks have been used to blockade certain sections of the N2.

Various roads are said to have been blocked as protesters have set fire to tyres and have placed debris in the road.

Exercise caution if travelling in the area.
