Margate Moves: New market pops up

If you are eco-conscious this community event will appeal to you.

The inaugural pop-up market offering pre-loved clothing, as well as anything that has been recycled was held last month and attracted a fair crowd.

Anyone selling or wanting to buy organic, artisanal, eco-friendly or non-plastic products is invited to the community market which takes place in Marine Drive, Ramsgate in front of the Artists’ Gallery, this Saturday (6th) from 9am to midday.

John at the helm

Ramsgate Conservancy recently held its 12th annual general meeting where the following office bearers were elected – chairman, John Murray, deputy chairman, David Halle, secretary, Ross Douthwaite and treasurer Adrian Voice. Presenting his report the chairman highlighted issues such as wastewater treatment, the Oatlands waste disposal site, dune erosion and alien plant eradication. One of its most noteworthy achievements was the joint venture with Ramsgate Tourism regarding the Eco-Tourism Centre. The conservancy also thanked its sponsors for their donations.

Spoilt for choice

Over the next few weeks, music lovers will be spoilt for choice as there is something to suit every taste on offer.

First up is something classical, so if compositions by Mozart, JS Bach, Haydn, Telemann or Weber get you out of the house take note the next Classics at Riverbend concert at Riverbend Conference Centre takes place today, Friday (5th). Tickets at R120 per person (which includes a free wine tasting) are on sale from the souvenir shop at Riverbend Crocodile Farm. The wine tasting starts a 5.45pm and the concert commences at 6.30pm.

`Tie a Knot in It’ is a fun original three-hander featuring the Rat Pack comprising Durban entertainers Rowan Bartlett, Darren King and Bryan Hiles, and is the next supper theatre show at the Azalea Hall.

The `Vegas’ style show at Margate Retirement Village takes place on Saturday, April 20. Doors open at 6pm and it’s showtime from 7pm.

If big band sound takes your fancy head off to this month’s classic movie – it’s `The Glenn Millar Story’ and will be screened at the Ronnie Baker Hall on Sunday, April 21 from 2.30pm. Cost is R5 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits at intermission.

Ramsgate’s iconic music venue Rocky Ridge has lined up a full weekend of performers. First up, this Friday (5th) is Faye Oakes and Wren Hinds who will be on stage from 8pm. Doors open at 6pm and the cost is R50 per person. Jacob’s Saw will launch its latest album this Saturday (6th) – no entrance fee – venue opens at 6pm and on Sunday (7th) Crastinater Pro aka Julian Damon will entertain. Doors open at midday and there’s a R30 entry fee.

Bagpipes and drums

If you prefer something Scottish there’s more good news. Margate Pipes and Drums will entertain at the South Coast Caledonian Society’s Burns’ Nicht celebrations. However, it will be a luncheon rather than an evening party to celebrate Rabbie Burns’s birthday. The place to be for haggis and a highland fling is Cafe Munro at Margate Retirement Village this Sunday (7th) at 12.30pm. Jurgen Human will also provide a few Celtic airs on his penny whistle. Tickets for this gathering of the clans (but you don’t have to be a Scot to be there) cost R110 and are available from the Elna Shop at the Shelly Centre.

Eggcellent time

The Hibiscus Rotary Club (Margate and Uvongo) invites all little people to its annual Easter egg hunt. It takes place at the weekly flea-market on Easter Saturday (20th) from 10.30am to 11.30am. For more information phone Andre at 083 4598982.

Calling all golfers

Southbroom Golf Club will host the annual SPCA Golf Day next Saturday (13th). Tee off times are from 10.44am to 12.15pm. The format is a betterball Stableford and the cost is R300 (includes green and competition fees). There are great prizes to be won. Players and supporters are asked to take along a bag of cat or dog food.
