Margate Moves: Carnival capers for cubs

On offer are carnival-style games, home-made popcorn and candyfloss, face painting and an opportunity to join in the many activities that the Cubs and Scouts undertake.

THE First Margate Scouts and Cub troops invite everyone to the fun carnival day they will host this weekend.

The venue is Shop 68 (opposite Ackerman’s) at the Southcoast Mall this Saturday from 9am to 3pm.

On offer are carnival-style games, home-made popcorn and candyfloss, face painting and an opportunity to join in the many activities that the Cubs and Scouts undertake.

There is also a lucky draw competition.

Ratepayers meet

Ramsgate residents are once more reminded to be at the RRRA’s (Ramsgate Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association) annual general meeting next week. It takes place at the Lions Club’s community hall in Glenmarkie Road, on Tuesday, April 2 at 5.30pm. Topping the agenda will be the presentation of the chairman’s report and an accounting officer will be appointed. The election of the committee will also be held at the AGM. If you reside in the Ramsgate area you are urged to attend the meeting.

Play for shelter

Golfers take note Southbroom Golf Club will hold the annual SPCA Golf Day on Saturday, April 13. Tee off times are from 10.44am to 12.15pm. The format is a betterball Stableford and the cost is R300 (includes green and competition fees). There are great prizes to be won. Players and supporters are asked to take along a bag of cat or dog food.

Great vibe

Ramsgate’s iconic music venue, Rocky Ridge in Fascadale Road, is delighted to have `Four 5 Seconds’ perform there this Saturday (30th). The band will entertain with classic rock, modern hits as well as their own original material.

Venue opens at 6pm and the band is on stage from 8pm. Entry is R40 per person.

`Indie Dog’ a four-piece indie-rock outfit from Johannesburg will play at Rocky Ridge on Saturday, April 13 from 8pm.

Something classical

If compositions by Mozart, JS Bach, Haydn, Telemann or Weber are your thing – read on. The next Classics at Riverbend concert at Riverbend Conference Centre takes place next Friday, April 5.

Tickets at R120 per person (which includes a free wine tasting) are on sale from the souvenir shop at Riverbend Crocodile Farm. The wine tasting starts at 5.45pm and the concert commences at 6.30pm.

Comedy cabaret

Music lovers are spoilt for choice over the next few weeks as there is also another great show on offer at the Azalea Hall. `Tie a Knot in It’ is a fun original three-hander featuring the Rat Pack comprising Rowan Bartlett, Darren King and Bryan Hiles. The supper theatre show at Margate Retirement Village takes place on Saturday, April 20. Doors open at 6pm and it’s showtime from 7pm.

Take note the next classic movie on offer at the village is `The Glenn Miller Story’ starring James Stewart and June Allyson. It will be screened at the Ronnie Baker Hall on Sunday, April 21 from 2.30pm. Cost is R5 which includes tea/coffee and biscuits at intermission.

Test your brainpower

If it’s the last Friday of the month it is time to socialise with the Ramsgate Lions Club members. Once a month the Lions hold a community braai and quiz night and everyone is invited to go along to the community hall in Glenmarkie Road (the old Ramsgate Bowling Club). Fires are lit from 6pm so take something to cook and your own liquid refreshments – salads are on sale. After supper, it’s quiz time. There are good prizes on offer for the brainy bunch.

Street party time

Margate Business Association (MBA) will host a Mardi Gras, in Marine Drive, Margate tonight (27th) from 6pm to 10pm. There are always interesting stalls selling unusual wares and of course the street party is well-known for its great fare.

Haggis on the menu

There’s plenty of entertainment in store at the South Coast Caledonian Society’s Burns’ Nicht celebrations. However, it will be a luncheon rather than an evening party to celebrate the birthday of Scottish bard Rabbie Burns. The place to be for haggis and a highland fling is Cafe Munro at Margate Retirement Village next Sunday (7th) at 12.30pm. The Margate Pipes and Drums will entertain and Jurgen Human will provide a few Celtic airs on his penny whistle. Tickets for this gathering of the clans (but you don’t have to be a Scot to be there) cost R110 and are available from the Elna Shop at the Shelly Centre.

Easter festival

Margate beach is going to be buzzing this Easter. The Bioplus Easter Fever festivities take place from April 19 to 22.

Aerobics, Zumba, volleyball, cricket, touch rugby and beach football top the programme along with giveaways and loads of fun events.

Happily ever after

Congratulations go to Marcelle Balkaran and Divalen Pillay who get married this Saturday (30th). They are wished a lifetime of love and happiness.
