N2 closed at Murchison due to water protest

Murchison and Bhobhoyi community members are protesting over lack of water

Traffic has been brought to a standstill on the N2 near Murchison due to a service delivery protest.

Both the Murchison and Bhobhoyi communities are protesting over water issues.

The community members said they were getting frustrated at having had no water for the past three weeks.

“We are not fighting, we are just here to demand a basic need,” said a one.

Ugu deputy mayor, Siphumlile Mthiyane and Speaker, Ntombifuthi Gumede were at the scene in an effort to try and calm protesters.

The deputy mayor accepted a memorandum of demands and promised to do everything possible to  have the water restored.

Police spokesman Captain Petros Mpinge said POP and Port Shepstone Crime Prevention members are monitoring the situation.

The traffic has been diverted at the Marburg intersection as an alternative route to Harding and Kokstad.

No damage or injuries have been reported at this stage.
