‘Bazooka’ murder still unsolved

Radebe was gunned down at his Mzamba homestead on March 22, 2016.

It’s been almost three years since the murder of Xolobeni mining activist and taxi boss Sikhosiphi ‘Bazooka’ Radebe and still no arrests have been made.

The Amadiba Crisis Committee (ACC), together with Radebe’s family, have tried in vain to get answers from the Hawks in the Eastern Cape.

Radebe was gunned down at his Mzamba homestead on March 22, 2016. He was shot eight times after allegedly refusing to go with the two gunmen who reportedly claimed to be policemen.

At the time, he was chairman of the ACC which for the past 15 years has been at the forefront of the battle to prevent mining from taking place in Xolobeni.

He was also president of the Mzamba Taxi Association.

His assassination followed a year of threats to anti-mining activists in Xolobeni.

The Xolobeni community opposes plans by Australian mining company MRC to mine titanium in the area.

After even having approached former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss Shaun Abrahams to take up investigations into Radebe’s death, the ACC says it’s now ‘seeking other avenues’ to get answers.

ACC spokesman Nonhle Mbuthuma said they were trying to get the docket moved from the Eastern Cape province.

Sikhosiphi ‘Bazooka’ Radebe.

“We have received nothing concrete from the Hawks in the Eastern Cape. When we enquire we are told that they are still investigating, that’s all.”

According to Ms Mbuthuma those opposing mining were still living in fear of their lives but would not be deterred.

“We are still going to fight for our land, regardless of the challenges and threats we may come across.”

Hawks spokesman Hangwani Mulaudzi said the matter was still under investigation.

Hawks Eastern Cape spokesman Anelisa Feni responded similarly.
