Drowning update at Port Edward: Father who died was trying to save his daughter

The man was declared dead on the scene.

Alan Stilwell, the NSRI Port Edward duty controller, said that the NSRI Port Edward duty crew were activated following eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress at Peter Pan Beach, Port Edward.

The sea rescue Rescue Runner was launched, Tower 13 lifeguards at the adjacent Kidds Beach responded, Police Search and Rescue, Med-Evac ambulance services and Netcare 911 ambulance services were activated.

It appears that a young female was caught in rip currents while swimming, her father went into the surf to assist followed by her mother who also entered the surf to assist.

A local surfer went to their assistance and a young man swimming nearby went to their assistance after all three, the daughter, her mother and her father, were caught in rip currents.

The mother and the daughter were swept onto rocks where the surfer assisted them and they were rescued to the beach by Tower 13 lifeguards and they were not injured.

Tower 13 lifeguards recovered the father, a 40 year old Johannesburg man, from the surf and paramedics conducted CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) efforts on the scene but sadly after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted he has been declared deceased.

Police have opened an inquest docket and the body of the man has been taken into the care of the forensic pathology services.

Condolences are conveyed to the family.
