Concern raised over poor state of railway tracks

A spokesman for Transnet said maintenance teams are tirelessly working along this section to improve the overall condition of the tracks.

Sunwich Port resident, Willie Terblanche is asking if a train derailment should occur  before any action is taken to fix the railway tracks.

Mr Terblanche is worried about the poor state of the railway tracks, especially between Sunwich Port and Anerley, towards ‘suicide bend’.

He said on his walks around the beach and railway tracks he noticed that the clips holding the rails to the sleepers have completely rusted away.

“The scary part of the track, which is on the bend just before going over the bridge, is even worse. I have reported this numerous times (even to safety managers) at Transnet, but have not seen any action or improvements on the line,” he said.

In response, Mike Asefovitz, executive manager of communications for Transnet, said the Port Shepstone infrastructure, as with most coastal areas, is prone to corrosion.

“We are fully aware of the condition of our infrastructure and have hence enforced various forms of remedial solutions to reduce the risk on our network. Some of these initiatives include the replacement of sleepers and rails, installation of drainage systems and rehabilitation of concrete bridges.”

He said their maintenance teams are tirelessly working along this section to improve the overall condition of the tracks.

“Great progress has been made in areas that previously had speed restrictions, which are now removed as we have covered these locations already.”
