This comes after trainee inspectors, Werner Taljaard and Jacob Mduna late yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon spotted a large truck transporting about 60 mules and sheep in absolutely horrendous conditions.

The animals were being taken from Olifantshoek in the Northern Cape to Kokstad.

The trainee inspectors immediately impounded the animals and brought the truck to the SPCA’s premises in Uvongo.

The animals were offloaded carefully and checked by SPCA veterinarian Dr Rivona Ramnanan for injuries.

The SPCA is now caring for 38 mules and 22 sheep and is desperately in need of food for the animals.

The SPCA staff together with committee members worked together until after dark to ensure the animals were fed, watered and safe after their nightmare trip.

Scott Kvalsvig, chairman of the committee said he was incredibly proud to work with such a fabulous group of people who go beyond for animals.

Carla Steenkamp, vice chairman of the committee, said their support staff was excellent. “I am more than proud of them. They are helping us build the foundation for a better society.”

“The mules were all squashed into the middle compartment, and when the driver braked all the animals were forced forward, squashing those in the front, and the gate hinges protruding out is what maimed the animals,” explained Scott.

“One of the animals had already been trampled to death inside the truck, and a blind mule  had to be euthanised due to a broken leg. The SPCA will be prosecuting, and a case of animal cruelty will be opened,” said supervisor, Stacey Beck.

“Please we are asking  our community to come together and help these animals that have been treated so badly,” said Stacey.
