Rapist sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment

After taking over the case, the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit were able to link Mkhwanazi to all three cases.

CONVICTED rapist Mandlakayise Mkhwanazi, has been sentenced to an effective 30 years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty on three counts of rape and three counts of kidnapping. He was sentenced by the Durban regional Court on November 13.

In the first matter, Mkhwanazi had committed the crimes in Port Shepstone in 2014. “In April of 2014, a 29-year-old women was at Oslo Beach when she was approached by Mkhwanazi. He offered her a lift to Gamalakhe, but instead drove towards Durban. She was taken to Umlazi where she was raped,” said Provincial Saps communications officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane.

Mkhwanazi was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for the rape and an additional five years’ imprisonment for kidnapping. The sentences will run concurrently.

In a separate case, a 39-year-old woman had taken a taxi from the Durban CBD to Berea. The driver of the taxi, Mkhwanazi, instead took her to Isipingo and raped her.

Mkhwanazi was again sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape and as well as an additional five years’ imprisonment for kidnapping. The sentences will run concurrently.

In the third case reported at the Umbilo Saps, a 43-year-old woman was kidnapped and raped by Mkhwanazi in the Umbilo area. After taking over the case, the Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit were able to link Mkhwanazi to all three cases. Mkhwanazi again received the same sentence for the third matter.

The sentences will run concurrently. Mkhwanazi still has a fourth matter pending in court in which he faces an additional charge of rape.
